TOPSHAM – The Scouting Amateur Radio Club has received a $1,500 equipment grant for its work in getting Scouts, parents and other members of the community involved in amateur radio.

Ray Sirois, the group’s adviser, teaches several entry-level courses each year, including one in Topsham starting Tuesday, April 13. Boy Scouts can earn the radio merit badge, and together with their parent, they can get their ham license.

The courses are not just for Boy Scouts. Adults and youth of all ages can participate.

“The grant will help us give some hands-on experience with good working gear to Camp Hinds BSA this summer, and use it for the upcoming course this spring. I was using my personal radio gear, but it was taking a beating, having been carried around from classes to demonstration events week after week. When it came time to repair or replace it, I decided we should ask for some help.”

The next class will be held at the new American Red Cross building, 1 Community Way. It will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. starting April 13 for six Tuesdays. Cost is $20 a family.
