BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Red Sox purchased right-hander Frank Castillo’s contract from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday and designated first baseman Brian Daubach for assignment.
Castillo, who pitched for the Red Sox from 2000-01, spent last year in Triple-A for Oakland and Atlanta. He is 82-103 with two saves and a 4.55 ERA in 294 major league appearances for the Cubs, Rockies, Tigers, Blue Jays and Red Sox.
Daubach was 0-for-1 with a walk in two pinch-hitting appearances this season for the Red Sox. He entered the season a .262 career hitter with 90 home runs and 322 RBIs in six big league seasons with Florida, Boston and the Chicago White Sox.
Daubach, who has often served as a designated hitter and can also play the outfield, averaged 21 homers and 75 RBIs for Boston from 1999-02.
