LEWISTON – A new chapter of Amnesty International is being organized at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College.

Faculty and students will host a meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, to begin organizing the group. The chapter will be open to students, faculty, staff and members of the community.

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. The organization’s vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.

It is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.

The meeting will be held in Room 103. Light refreshments will be served. All who are interested are invited to attend. For more information, contact Christy Hammer at 753-6518 or e-mail chammer@usm.maine.edu.
