OTISFIELD – Order forms to purchase home composting bins need to be turned in at the town office by 5 p.m. Thursday, May 20, Selectmen Assistant Marianne Izzo-Morin said during the Board of Selectmen meeting Wednesday night.

Composting can save residents money because it will lower the amount of waste shipped to Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. in Auburn. It will save on shipping charges as well as disposal fees, Izzo-Morin noted. An estimated 25 percent of an average household’s waste consists of yard trimmings and kitchen scraps that can be composted.

Otisfield is participating in a statewide composting bin sale that offers bins valued at $80 for $31.50. The program was setup through the State Planning Office and Waste Management Recycling Program.

Izzo-Morin said the bins are available to anyone who wants one, even to people who do not live in the community. A “how-to” guide is included with each bin order.

The bins are black, have a 10-year warranty, and are made with 100 percent recycled plastic. They are approximately 35 inches high and 33 inches wide and are large enough to accommodate the compostable waste from a family of five.

A bin is on display at the town office and order forms are also there.

Payment is due with the form and the bins will be delivered to the town office on June 28.

Izzo-Morin noted even though the form states it needs to be turned in by May 22, she must have it by 5 p.m. May 20.
