ORONO – The majority of University of Maine students have left the Orono campus for the summer, but there will still be students around, particularly in July, when more than 400 young musicians from grades six through 12 arrive for Maine Summer Youth Music Camp.

The 24th annual youth music junior camp for musicians in grades six through nine runs July 11 to 16 at the Class of 1944 Building and Maine Center for the Arts. Senior camp, for students grades 10 through 12, is July 18 to 30.

Cost for the summer camps are available by calling the UMaine School of Performing Arts at 207-581-4702. Additional information and an application form are available online at the School of Performing Arts Web site at www.umaine.edu/spa/.

The deadline is May 24.

Lobster project

KENNEBUNK – The Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation will deploy drifters off the coast of Maine and Massachusetts. Approximately 16 drifters will be released by lobstermen on the first of each month from June through September from the following sites: Cutler, Isle au Haut and Small Point.

Fishermen and mariners who sight these units are asked to report the drifters using a toll-free automated system. Call 1-888-284-4904. Press “5” to enter the location of the drifter.

The goal is to study surface drift patterns and its impacts on the lobster population. The data will be used to verify and improve oceanographic models in New England. Visit www.emolt.org for more information.

Camp clean-up

JAY – Individuals, families and organizations will work together to clean up and restore many of the remote, unsupervised and often privately-owned campsites, scenic locations and water access points in Maine that are available to the public free on Saturday, May 22.

“Campsite Clean-Up Day is one way we can give something back to private landowners who allow public use of their property,” said Dave Lovejoy, Maine Chapter, Izaak Walton League, vice president and coordinator of the event.

Contact the league at 897-6295 or iwlamaine@iwlamaine.org to help, if there is a site in need of attention or for more information. Everyone is encouraged to participate! Rain date is Sunday, May 23.
