The Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race is a 250-mile course of trekking, running, mountain biking, canoeing and navigating with map and compass. The event begins today, with top finishers expected to cross the line in Newry mid-afternoon Monday.
Competitors will begin by canoeing on Mountain View Pond, on the western shore of Moosehead Lake, northwest of Greenville. From there, they will:
• Portage north and west to Indian Pond; paddle southwest to Harris Dam and the Kennebec River; switch to rafts at the dam and follow the Kennebec River to The Forks.
• Switch to mountain bikes; ride north on Route 201, west on Hardscrabble/Appleton/Skinner/Gold Brook Road to Route 27; take roads west through Alder Stream Township to Tim Pond Road, to Wiggle Brook Road, to Cupsuptic Road to Big Falls.
• Change at Big Falls to canoes to paddle the Cupsuptic River south to Cupsuptic and Mooselookmeguntic Lake, to Upper Dam, then Richardson Lake to Middle Dam; portage Rapid River to Umbagog Lake, cross lake to Androscoggin River, paddle the river to Errol, N.H., then beyond to Pontook Dam.
• Leave canoes at the dam and hike northeast through the mountains to west of Route 16, to Dixville Notch and The Balsams resort high in the White Mountains.
• From The Balsams, bike Route 26 south through Grafton Notch State Park, dropping bikes at the eastern border of the park.
• Hike south through Miles Notch to Ketchum, and across Sunday River to finish behind the Grand Summit in Newry.
It will be an all-out race from start to finish, with stops made only to transition from boat to raft, raft to bike, bike to canoe, and canoe to foot.
