LOCKE MILLS – Jackson-Silver Post 68, American Legion, has had a busy spring. In March, in addition to making a donation to Camp Tall Pines, a special supper meeting was given to honor the post on the birthday of the American Legion.

Delegates were selected to attend the State Legion and Auxiliary Convention in June at Augusta.

In April the monthly suppers/dances resumed. Also in April, the post and auxiliary hosted the annual installation of officers of the Oxford County Council, American Legion, and Auxiliary. A donation was made to sponsor member Pam Rugg of the Christian Motorcyclists’ Association for a ride to raise money for the charities they help. Since then another donation has been made for the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn.

Three Telstar Regional High School juniors were chosen to attend Dirigo Girls State in June and they will have spending money.

On May 1 the post hosted the testimonial for the Second District (Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties) Legion Commander Robert Thomas and President Elaine Rogers, followed a few days later by the joint installation of the new post and auxiliary officers.

Dorcey Dunn is the recipient of the scholarship money this year. Monetary assistance is also being given to Marissa Corriveau to attend a National Youth Leadership Forum on medicine in Boston at the end of July.

Member Kelly Bickford, a veteran of the Persian Gulf conflict, is heading an effort to collect comfort items to be sent to the troops in Iraq. Quite a few items have already been collected in a basket set up for that purpose at the Bethel Foodliner. She will send them each week to the units from Maine. She will also approach local businesses or organizations for donations of phone cards and small battery-operated fans.

The previously scheduled regular meeting of June 17 has been postponed to June 24, when the delegates who attend the state convention on June 18 and 19 will report. There will be no meetings in July.
