AUBURN – The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has announced the winners of the annual Feline Foto Contest. The contest, held in conjunction with the Strutt Your Mutt Dog Walk and Pet Festival on May 22, celebrated the special cats in the community.

With more than 80 photos entered in the contest, the three judges, Harvey Bell of Bell Photographic Inc. in Turner, Mayor Lionel Guay of Lewiston and Mayor Norm Guay of Auburn, had the task of choosing the winners. Photos were judged in four categories.

Diane Mawhinney of Auburn received first place in the Best All-Around category.

Best Dressed category: first, Pat Morton of Lewiston; second, Cassandra Kenney of Durham; third, Kate Mawhinney of Auburn.

Funniest category, first, Christina Berry of Lewiston; second, Shelly Joseph of Auburn; third, Jody Yamamoto of Auburn.

Cutest category: first, Bev Fortier of Auburn; second, Jeannine Tardif of Lewiston; third, Billie Lou Damon of South Paris.

The society provides a safe haven for approximately 3,600 sick, homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area a year. The primary support for the shelter comes from fund-raising events and donations of residents.

The shelter gives back through community services, including animal intake and adoption, animal health services, reuniting people with lost animals, humane education and working with individuals who are disadvantaged or developmentally disabled. The shelter serves 10 municipalities, including Lewiston, Auburn, Turner and Greene, and a total population of more than 90,000 people.
