NORWAY – The Child Health Center’s Norway Preschool raised $1,147.50 during the spring flower bulb and perennial fund-raiser. The proceeds will be used to purchase digital cameras for the three preschool classrooms.

The cameras will be used as part of the preschool’s ongoing effort to document the children’s successes. The cameras will allow the teachers to photograph the children’s work as well as their activities. The cameras will also be useful as the teachers development curriculum, which can be individualized to meet specific needs of each child.

One such program used in the preschool is called the Picture Exchange Communication System. The system of nonverbal communication helps children who have limited vocalization to communicate their needs or desires.

The program uses pictures of items and people familiar to a child as their method of communication. The method can be learned without using vocalization, making communication easier for children who are in the building stages of their vocabulary.

The Child Health Center is a nonprofit organization, which strives to improve the health and well-being of children and their families. The center is located in Norway and Auburn with a branch in Rumford. For Information regarding services, call 743-7035.
