NORWAY – Town officials will meet this week with three police chiefs who have agreed to help with the search for a new chief for Norway’s department.

Brunswick Police Chief Jerry A. Hinton, Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Steve Clark and Topsham Police Chief Tim Young have agreed to review qualifications of the six applicants chosen for interviews by the Police Chief Search Committee, Town Manager David Holt said.

The chiefs will perform background checks and review supervisory skills of the applicants on behalf of the 10-member committee, formed after selectmen voted in April to uphold Holt’s firing of Chief Tim Richards.

Richards was fired after a former female patrolman in the department, Cynthia Mitchell, filed a protection-from-abuse order against him, alleging assault and continuing harassment.

Holt said the chiefs will also look at the professionalism and ethics of the applicants on behalf of the committee, which is composed of the five-member Board of Selectmen and five residents. The residents are Darlene Sessions, Jancy Cazneau, Don Gouin, David Everett and Carol Perkins.

Perkins is the director of the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project’s Norway office.The six candidates were chosen for interviews from a field of 18 applicants. The position was advertised statewide. Holt said two of the finalists live in Oxford County .
