WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) – He’s just 19 years old, but Al Jefferson looks the part of an NBA first-round draft pick. At 6-foot-10 and 265 pounds, he’d have a hard time convincing anyone otherwise, even if he just graduated from high school.
Jefferson, the Boston Celtics’ top pick and 15th overall in Thursday night’s NBA draft, met the media Friday with fellow draft picks guards Delonte West and Tony Allen and forward Justin Reed at the team’s practice facility.
While the team’s other picks were attired more casually – Allen wore a Celtics jersey with Larry Bird’s No. 33 – Jefferson came dressed to impress, donning a navy blue suit.
“I’m enjoying all of this,” said Jefferson, of Prentiss, Miss., a town of 1,158 about 60 miles south of Jackson, the state capital. “I may not be showing it, but I’m having a ball.”
Jefferson averaged a mind-boggling 42 points and 18 rebounds during his senior season at Prentiss High. But both director of basketball operations Danny Ainge and coach Doc Rivers have said not to expect too much from Jefferson right away, as he learns the NBA game.
Last season, the team drafted Kendrick Perkins, a 6-foot-10, 280-pound center, out of high school. Despite his size, Perkins appeared in just 10 games, playing just 35 minutes.
But the soft-spoken Jefferson is hoping to take advantage of his situation and play right away.
“It all depends on how much I want it,” Jefferson said. “It’ll be a lot of hard work, but I think I can come in and play a lot.”
Allen, a Chicago native, received a congratulatory call from former Celtic and fellow Chicago native Antoine Walker when he was drafted.
“This is just a dream come true for me,” Allen said. “I was shocked when they drafted me. It didn’t set in until the cameras were in my face when I got here.”
“Tony is powerful, can score off the dribble and can be one of the top defenders in the NBA,” Ainge said.
“I’m coming here to win,” said West, who helped lead St. Joseph’s to an undefeated regular season last year. “I’m hoping I can bring the winning tradition from St. Joe’s. That’s why I play the game.”
West, who averaged 18.9 points per game at St. Joseph’s playing alongside Jameer Nelson, was taken with the 24th overall selection after bypassing his senior season. Allen, who scored 16 points per game at Oklahoma State, was taken with the next pick.
Reed, a 6-8 forward who was the only player in the SEC to rank in the top five in scoring (18.5) and rebounding (7.5), was the team’s final pick at No. 40 overall.
“I can’t wait until get to work with all of them,” Rivers said. “We’ve got four guys who not only have a chance to make the team, but also have a good chance of helping the team.”
All four were given jersey numbers. Jefferson opted for Walker’s former jersey, No. 8, while West chose No. 13, Allen was given No. 42 and Reed No. 9.
