GREENE – The town has purchased software that will provide the Budget Committee and the town a more detailed picture of spending.

In the past, the town has lumped most of its spending into general accounts providing only a final dollar amount. Town Manager Steve Eldridge said although it was an effective process it did not give a clear perspective of what it costs to run each department.

The software TRIO will do just that.

“For instance, utilities,” he explained. “We had one budget area that covered all utility expenses in the town, instead of what it costs to run each office.”

With the new system, town officials will be able to see how much it costs to run, for example, the fire department and town office.

“It lays everything out better,” he said. “And will reduce the number of articles voted on during (town) meetings.”

The town currently uses TRIO software for almost everything excluding budget purposes. Eldridge said this move will make all of its software compatible.

“It will be a big learning curve for the town, Budgeting Committee and the selectmen,” he said. “But this is the way most towns budget; Greene has just never done it this way.”

Town tax bills will be sent Tuesday and if paid by July 28, a 5 percent discount will be deducted. The selectmen said payment plans could be arranged by contacting the town office.

Another technological leap the town has made, according to Eldridge, was changing its telephone provider to Fairpoint, a company that recently purchased CommTel.

Greene has contracted with Fairpoint to provide software called Centrax that links all town departments into one phone system acting in a way like a multifaceted dispatching network. Town officials said it would make office-to-office contact much easier.

Androscoggin Land Trust presented a plaque to the town for its ongoing contribution to the Hopper Pond Conservation Project.
