BETHEL – The Bethel Historical Society will sponsor the annual community picnic at noon Sunday, July 4, on the grounds of the Dr. Moses Mason House featuring the music of the Portland Brass Quintet. If the weather is inclement, the picnic will be held at the Middle Intervale Meeting House. In Dr. Mason’s day, beginning in the 1850s, Fourth of July orations and music were held on the grounds and the event continues the tradition.

Another brass musical event will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 31, when 26 members of the Yankee Brass Band, dressed in 1850s era fireman’s uniforms, will play authentic 19th century music with Civil War brass instruments on the grounds of the Dr. Moses Mason House or at the West Parish Congregational Church if rainy.

The concert is expected to last approximately an hour and a half. Members of the band come from throughout the United States, represent all walks of life and share a passion for early brass band music. They gather at Colby College during the last week in July and play in several Maine and New Hampshire communities. Bethel was selected for one of this year’s concerts.

To offset the expense of these two events, contributions are being solicited. Tax deductible donations can be made in any amount and sent to the society at P.O. Box 12, Bethel, ME 042l7-0012. Further information can be obtained by calling the society 1-800-824-2910 or e-mail info@bethelhistorical.org.
