LEWISTON – Local high school students interested in taking college courses in the fall semester may do so at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College through the Early Study program.

The academic enrichment program helps qualified juniors and seniors earn college credits while still in high school.

In general, USM Early Study participants are advanced students in the top 20 percent of their classes. Students who are home-schooled may also be eligible to participate in the program.

Early Study at USM is intended to help students supplement, not supplant, the academic program of the high school, and recommendations from guidance counselors are required.

Iris Guillemette, student services adviser and Early Study Program coordinator at LAC, describes Early Study as “an excellent opportunity for students to enrich their high school programs and become familiar with the college setting. More than 125 students took advantage of this program on our three campuses last year.”

High school students interested in taking USM courses at the Lewiston-Auburn campus must submit an application form and a copy of their transcript, then meet with one of the academic advisers at the college. The adviser will facilitate the course registration process and work closely with high school officials to ensure that students have a positive experience and that schools receive the documentation they need regarding the student’s performance.

Application forms may be obtained by calling 753-6500 or by downloading them from the Web at www.usm.maine.edu/eap/earlystudy/. The complete fall course listing is also available online at www.usm.maine.edu/lac/schedules/.

The costs of participating in the Early Study program include tuition and fees as well as book and supply expenses. USM offers Early Study students a waiver of one-half tuition for up to six credit hours or two courses (whichever is greater) if all criteria are met.

Students interested in participating should also contact their guidance office to explore if their school qualifies for reimbursement for the costs involved. For more information about the program or to schedule an appointment with an adviser, call LAC at 753-6500.
