WILTON – Michael J. Benson, son of Peter and Patty Benson of Wilton, graduated in May from the University of Maine at Orono, summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, concentrating in accounting and management information systems.

Benson was active in the classroom and in extracurricular activities at UMaine. He was a member of the business honors society, Beta Gamma Sigma. He also belonged to Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, all academic honor societies.

He helped to re-start the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, which, since its inception in 2000, has maintained the highest grade point average among all the social fraternities at UMaine. Benson served as vice president of finance, vice president of recruitment and chaplain for the fraternity. His senior year, he was a member of the Senior Skull Honor Society, a group representing the top 1 percent of the senior class. He was also president of the Interfraternity Council (governing body of the fraternity system).

Benson won two major awards to culminate his college career. The first, from his national fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, was the Zollinger Senior Award given to the top SigEp senior in New England. He also won the fraternity Man of the Year Award recognizing the most well balanced fraternity man at the University of Maine.

Benson has accepted a job with his national fraternity as a regional director. He will train at the fraternity headquarters in Richmond, Va., for the summer before being placed in a region of the country.
