NORWAY – Friends of the Norway Memorial Library is sponsoring two programs. At 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, Murad Sayen, photographer and author of newly published book “Maine: The Home Place,” will present a slide show of his work over the past 25 years. His subjects include nature, landscape, people, farms and architecture.

“Cooks and Characters” will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, featuring recipes drawn from the Friends of the Norway Library cookbook, “Appetite for Nostalgia: A Maine Community’s Cooks and Characters.” There will be eight recipes to sample from the book’s appetizers and dessert sections. Used book sale

NORWAY – The Friends of the Norway Memorial Library will hold their annual used book sale of summer from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 9, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at the library on Main Street. There will be hundreds of used books, including many children’s books. Buyers should bring bags to fill.

Roast pork supper

PARIS – The South Paris American Legion Auxiliary and Post will host a public roast pork supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 9, at the Foster Carroll Hall on Church Street. Members are asked to set up tables at 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit sending items to National Guard members of the 133rd Battalion serving in Iraq.

PARIS – The third annual Art Moves into the Schools Summer Dance Festival kicks off with a concert of music and dance by female African drumming group Inanna and Art Moves Dance Company of Norway. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 9 and 10, at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School’s auditorium on Route 26. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Saturday brings a showcase of students and pros on a dance stage on the Norway Town Office lawn from 3 to 5 p.m. free. Bring a blanket or chair. Participants will be Josie Conte, Karen Montanaro, Bruce Tracy, Art Move Dance Project, the Ballroom, the Festival Dancers, Naya’s Trance and more.

Pig roast

NORWAY – A pig roast will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 9, at the Norway Fire Station. Included will be potato salad, cole slaw, corn, rolls and strawberry shortcake. Adults $10; children under age 13, $5. Proceeds benefit the Oxford County Fair.

Lobster roll lunch

NORWAY – The Second Congregational Church Women’s Fellowship will hold its annual lobster roll luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at the church at Paris and Main Street. Eat in or take out. For information phone 743-2290.

Yard, bake sale

PARIS – A yard and bake sale will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Route 117 north. The sale will include white elephant items, crafts, books, clothing, and morning coffee and snacks. Held rain or shine.

Run to the Lake

NORWAY – Healthy Oxford Hills presents its third annual Oxford Hills 8K Run to the Lake on Sunday, July 11. It begins with the 1K children’s fun run at 7:45 a.m. Events include the 5K fitness walk at 8 a.m., and the 8K road race at 8:30 a.m. People may register at Norway Savings Bank on Main Street, or online at Active.com. Entry fees are $10 for the 8K road race, $5 for the 5K fitness walk, and $2 for the 1K children’s fun run. There will also be a $10 deposit, which will be refunded unless the participant chooses to submit it to the 50/50 cash drawing held during the post-race awards ceremony. More information may be obtained by calling 743-5933, extension 775. The event is sponsored by several local businesses.

ATV course

DIXFIELD – An ATV safety course will be offered from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at the Webb River Sportsman’s Club. Participants must be at least 10 years old accompanied by an adult.
