Angels 12, White Sox 0

CHICAGO – Jarrod Washburn pitched a four-hitter for his first career shutout, and Jose Guillen homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the Anaheim Angels over the Chicago White Sox 12-0.

Angels catcher Bengie Molina grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play in the sixth inning. With runners at first and second, Molina hit a hard one-hopper to Joe Crede, who stepped on third and threw a strike to Juan Uribe at second. Uribe’s relay to first easily beat Molina, one of the slowest players in the majors.

It was the first triple play for the White Sox since June 6, 1996, at Boston. Anaheim hadn’t hit into a triple play since Aug. 25, 1992, at Baltimore.

Washburn (9-4) struck out six and walked two in his fifth career complete game and first this season. He had started 145 games without pitching a shutout, an Angels record.

Guillen tied a career high for RBIs to lead the Angels to their second straight win over the White Sox, who have dropped five in a row overall. Chicago has scored just nine runs in its past six games.

Garret Anderson added his 200th career home run in the seventh inning, a two-run shot off reliever Felix Diaz.

Guillen hit both of his homers off starter Scott Schoeneweis, who came off the disabled list to face his former team for the second time this season. Guillen went 3-for-3 with a double and scored three times before leaving for a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Guillen hit a two-run shot in the second inning, then a three-run drive in the third after Vladimir Guerrero’s RBI single. It was Guillen’s fourth career multihomer game.

Schoeneweis (5-7) lost his fifth straight decision, giving up six runs and five hits in five innings. The left-hander went on the disabled list June 25 with inflammation in his left elbow.

Tim Salmon knocked in Guillen in the sixth with an RBI single.

Anderson’s home run was his sixth of the season. It scored Chone Figgins, who singled.

Robb Quinlan hit a two-run double in the ninth, and Jeff DaVanon added a sacrifice fly.

Notes: Salmon went 0-for-2 against Schoeneweis, extending his hitless streak against left-handers to 39 at-bats. … Guillen’s last multihomer game came on Aug. 16, 2003, with Oakland against Toronto. He’s had five RBIs three times, most recently on Sept. 9, 2002, with Cincinnati against Pittsburgh. … White Sox slugger Frank Thomas sat out with inflammation in his left ankle. He will probably miss Thursday’s game as well, but is expected to return to the lineup Friday. … Thomas and teammate Paul Konerko finished behind Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui in Internet fan voting for the final spot on the AL All-Star team.
