Beach cleanup needs helpers

Selectmen are seeking volunteers to spend a day at the town beach. On Wednesday, July 14, the town will plant shrubs, mulch and undertake other projects to help erosion control at the town beach on Bear Pond. The work will be done in conjunction with the soil and water conservation departments for Androscoggin, Oxford and Cumberland counties.

The project was funded by a grant to the Bear Pond Improvement Association to improve water quality. Work will begin at 1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to bring shovels, rakes and gloves. For more information, phone Eva Leavitt at the Town Office at 225-3414.

Board awards bid for salt shed

The Board of Selectmen this week accepted a bid of $27,725 from Brown Construction of Turner for a salt shed at the town pit.

But selectmen will seek more information before awarding a bid on repairs at the Town House in Turner Center. The Town House, which has been on the National Register of Historic Buildings since 1979, has some fairly significant structural problems.

The two bids that were received recommended different options to fix the problems. Selectmen decided that they did not have the expertise to make the decision. They will ask a local resident who restores historic buildings to give them further information and make recommendations.
