BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) – A U.S. soldier has died from wounds sustained in an insurgent attack on his patrol, the U.S. military command said Friday.

The soldier, whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was wounded in the Thursday night attack in Baghdad and evacuated to a combat hospital, where he later died, the military said in a statement.

U.S. forces detained two people in the attack.

As of Thursday, 868 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Defense Department.
