RUMFORD – The third week of Summer Fest at Rumford Public Library begins Monday, July 19, with the Kids on the Block Puppet Troupe, made up of students from Mountain Valley Middle School and Mountain Valley High School, under the direction of school health nurse Kathy Sutton.

The Kids on the Block are puppets that dress and act like disabled and non-disabled children. The puppets portray children with definite likes and dislikes, talents and limitations, and they present a message on personal safety.

Louanne Thibodeau and a group of young gymnasts that she has coached will be at the library on Tuesday, July 20, for “Tumbling Fun.” Thibodeau will have participants do stretches and other warm-up exercises, then the gymnasts will demonstrate some of the basic gymnastic moves. Everyone will then have the opportunity to practice the moves. Organizers advise participants to wear comfortable clothing appropriate for tumbling.

On Wednesday, July 21, Rob and Kim White and their unusual pets will be welcomed back. Rob will speka about his ball python snakes. In past years, children have been fascinated with the snakes and willing to hold them under Rob’s and Kim’s watchful attention.

Thursday, July 22, is the 28th annual Fun Day, when volunteers work together to create a fun-filled time for the youngsters. There will be games, balloons and face-painting, as well as cotton candy and popcorn.

Sue Bousquet and Deb Dolloff will be the special guests at the noontime Picnic in the Park on Friday, July 23, with the theme “Camp Out with a Good Book.” Peru Elementary School teachers have been presenting this Summer Fest program for several years, combining their talents to offer a session of stories and activities. Participants are asked to pack a lunch and bring a picnic blanket. It will be held rain or shine.

With the exception of the Friday noontime Picnic in the Park, all other Summer Fest programs start at 3 p.m. All programs are free. Parents are welcome at all the programs and are encouraged to attend with younger children.

There is still time to participate in the summer reading program, titled “Discover New Trails @ Your Library…READ.” Children interested in the summer reading program may get further information about the program and the reading incentives by picking up a reading log packet in the Children’s Room.

Photography contest

ANDOVER – The annual Andover photography contest will be exhibited on Saturday, Aug. 7, downstairs in the Town Hall. Photographs are categorized into three subject groups. Group A consists of portraits, animals and landscapes. Groups B and C are separated into age brackets, not subject matter. Group D is black-and-white prints by all ages.

There will be 71 ribbons awarded, of which six will be grand prizes and one for best of show. The best-of-show winner receives $20. Judging is based on composition, subject matter, artistry, demonstrative and clarity.

All photographs must be submitted at the Andover Town Hall no later than Wednesday, Aug. 4. Dates and times for submitting photographs will be 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 31; 5-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2; and 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4.

Each photograph must have a name, address, and age if under 17, printed on the reverse side of the photograph. No photograph will be accepted with a name on the photo side. Only three photographs of any subject matter will be accepted per person.

The contest of for amateurs; professionals’ work will not be accepted. All photographs must be picked up by 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7. Photos may be retrieved between 4-5 p.m.
