LEWISTON – If you think it’s hot today, try putting on pads and a helmet and running around with 300-pound behemoths waiting to knock your block off.
The Central Maine Shockers will start working up a sweat at 1 p.m. today when they play their New England Football League home opener against the Mid-Coast Chaos at Lewiston Athletic Park.
The Shockers beat the Tri-Boro Rhinos, 35-6, in last week’s season opener. Running back Marvin Langley gained 104 yards and scored a touchdown on just five carries and also ran a kick back 86 yards for a touchdown. Jon McCabe caught two touchdown passes.
Trying to keep up with that potent offense is a chore against a Shocker defense that includes hard-hitting safety Jon Landry and linebacker Kevin Do and cornerback Julian Palange.
Saturday’s game is the inaugural for the Chaos, a first-year team out of Bath.
“From what we’ve seen of them, they’re a big team,” said team co-owner/linebacker Zach Stewart.
The Shockers have the beef to match-up up front, with guards D.J. Averill and Jay Cyr and 340-pound tackle Chris Cameron.
“Linebackers get punished by those guys if they blitz,” Stewart said.
Saturday’s game will also be the debut of the Shockers’ new cheerleaders, the Shockettes.
Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 get in free. Anyone who plays organized football, whether its college, high school, junior high school or fly, will be admitted free if they wear their jersey.
