LOCKE MILLS – The Jackson-Silver Post and Auxiliary, American Legion, have continued bingo games and monthly suppers/dances this summer. The auxiliary also purchased gifts for those at the veterans’ home with July birthdays and held that party on the third Tuesday of July. Some also helped when the Oxford County Auxiliary gave the party in June.

The last regular meeting took place in June after the State Legion and Auxiliary Convention. As Rowena Dunham was not present at that time it was necessary to find a time and place to present her with the awards she won at the convention. As several members would be present at the Locke Mills Union Church, it was decided to make the presentation following a service there. Kelly Bickford presented Dunham with a ceramic angel and plaque for her unit history and another plaque for having the best veterans’ history project.

The regular meeting schedule will resume with the family picnic at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Legion Hall followed by a meeting if needed. Hot dogs, hamburgers and corn on the cob will be furnished. Members attending are asked to bring something to share – salads or desserts.

Members are urged to get their 2005 dues in by that time. It has been learned that dues will go up on Sept. 1 by $2.50 for senior members and $1 for juniors.

The auxiliary is working on a Red Cross blood drive at the Legion Hall from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23. Post members are helping and Franklin Grange 124 in Bryant Pond has been invited to assist as a community service project. Potential donors who have not been contacted are invited to call 665-2909 or other members. Walk-ins will be welcome, but it is better to have an appointment time.
