SALEM – Aaron Shorey, an outstanding student recently graduated from Mount Abram High School, received a $1,500 Cianchette Brothers Scholarship from the Cianbro Charitable Foundation. Shorey is the son of Cianbro team member and senior project engineer David Shorey.
Ival “Bud” Cianchette, chairman of Cianbro’s board, hosted a special reception in honor of Shorey and 20 other scholarship winners and their families.
“Aaron is a far-sighted and determined student,” said Cianbro President and CEO Pete Vigue. “He pushes himself to do well.”
Shorey will attend the College of Engineering at the University of Maine at Orono. He will enroll in the chemical engineering course. That, Shorey said, will be preparation for a successful career with which he will, in due time, provide for a family.
Shorey and friends learned to play steel drums in elementary school. He belongs to an adult community steel drum band that plays all over the state. He is working at a gas station this summer to earn part of his college expenses.
He said, “I am really and truly thankful for my Cianchette Brothers Scholarship. I will do my part at college. Guaranteed!”
Foundation trustee Alan Burton said, “Aaron is a capable student, one willing to work, and one who will accept nothing less than success. We are proud to help him along his way.”
“Aaron is a lot of fun to be around,” said his father, Dave. “When giving the welcoming speech at his high school graduation, he asked the audience to bear with him when he turned to his classmates and sang Lean on Me’ without any music. We are all grateful to Cianbro for their help and support. There is no doubt in my mind that Aaron will put his scholarship to good use.”
Named for Cianbro’s Founders, the scholarship program was established in 1999 to help qualified college kids of Cianbro team members. The foundation was established in the mid-80s.
