INDUSTRY – Harriet “Sylvia” McFarlane, 80, of Industry died Aug. 20, quietly at home, surrounded by her family, after a long illness.

She was born June 30, 1924, in Portland, the daughter of John and Harriett (Fairweather) Thorne.

Educated in the schools of Portland, she graduated as valedictorian from Cathedral High School in 1941. She also attended the University of Wisconsin School of Bank Administration, graduating in 1977.

She married Vernon T. McFarlane on June 28, 1947 in Portland.

She retired from Fleet Bank, now Bangor Savings, in 1983, having been in the business for 21 years. She was former regional manager of the National Association of Bank Women. She is listed in the Who’s Who in American Women.

“Sylvia” was a devout member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church serving on the parish council for many years. She enjoyed reading, skiing, handcrafts, going out to breakfast and being a member of the incredible Seniors’ Bowling League. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Vernon, of Industry; two sons, Jeff McFarlane and his wife, Anita, of Industry, Paul McFarlane and his wife, Cathy, of Chelsea; a daughter, Paula Hubbard, of Pittsfield; five grandchildren, Jeremy, Chris, Kelly, and Julie McFarlane and Colin Hubbard; two great-grandchildren, Tristin and Samuel McFarlane.
