DIXFIELD – The National Wild Turkey Federation has developed a program designed to offer women ages 14 and over the opportunity to gain in-the-field skills in an environment that encourages fun and success in the outdoors.

The new program, Women in the Outdoors, will target women who want to learn outdoor skills through inexpensive, one-day courses addressing such topics as basic fly fishing, dog training, archery, outdoor photography, game calling, Dutch oven cooking, tracking and shoot sports.

The federation believes the program will teach women about wildlife management, increase participation in outdoor recreation and encourage support of the mission to conserve wild turkeys and preserve the hunting tradition.

In addition, it will provide the foundation to train women as outdoor educators and develop a network of outdoor enthusiasts with similar interests.

“We’re especially excited that these outdoor learning experiences will be one-day events offered at a very affordable cost that will appeal to today’s busy and budget-conscious women,” said Bonnie Smith, program coordinator.

A day is being planned for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Webb River Valley Sportsman’s Club, Canton Point Road. Course offerings will include archery, shotgun, fly fishing, Dutch oven cooking, dog training, tracking, outdoor photography, knot tying and game calling.

The cost of $45 will provide instructors, the use of equipment and educational materials for all registrants. To receive registration information contact Bonnie Smith at 1-207-364-9054. Participation is limited to the first 30 registrants and preregistration is required.
