Dear Sun Spots: Sun Spots has always been very helpful in letting readers know about our continuing need for volunteers.

This fall, Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice will offer a 27-hour training course for compassionate individuals to become hospice volunteers. The classes will be held Wednesday evenings from Sept. 22 through Nov. 17 in conjunction with Lewiston Adult Education.

Hospice volunteers provide companionship and support of terminally ill patients, and much needed respite to their families. Volunteers visit hospice patients at home and in long-term care facilities. Beginning in the summer of 2005, hospice volunteers also can be active in a 14-bed hospice house that is being built by our agency in Auburn.

Only two to four hours per week can make a tremendous difference for families in central Maine.

We also have a continuing need for:

• Grocery volunteers to pick up and deliver groceries to homebound patients.

• Visiting volunteers to provide companionship and support for patients recovering from illness.

• Transportation volunteers to provide rides for medical appointments and needs.

• Office volunteers for telephone calling and special projects.

For more detailed information, please call Polly Robinson, recruiter, volunteer services, or Nancy Greene, volunteer coordinator at (207) 777-7740 or 1-800-482-7412. Thanks very much. – Nancy Greene, Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, Lewiston.

Dear Sun Spots: I am a 1976 graduate of Mount Abram High School. I would like to hear from a classmate of mine, Kathy French. French is her maiden name. I would also like to hear from the reunion committee. It’s important to me that I hear from them. Please leave a message if I’m not home. Please call me at (207) 784-3934. – Gary Brandt, Lewiston.

Dear Sun Spots: I am a 36-year-old German national. And I am very much interested in the lives and people of Maine and that’s why I really would like to have some pen pals from your state.

Is it possible for you to publish my postal and e-mail address and ask your readers if they’d like to correspond with me? I write in German and English (and in some other languages), and I would like to write with some people over there in Maine via e-mail, but post also would be fine.

I have lots of hobbies and interests, such as: reading good books, traveling, foreign countries and cultures, movies, history, nature and wildlife, astronomy, fossils, politics and many other things more.

Indeed, I hope that there are many people over there in your state who would like to write with someone in Germany. I can be reached at: Reiner-Lange-Str. 1, D-21680 Stade, Germany, or via e-mail at: Tb21680@aol.com. – Torsten Behrens, Germany.

Dear Sun Spots: I have Daily Guidepost books from 1977 to 2004 to give away to anyone who would like to have them. The dates may not be right, but the stories and messages are good for any time.

Also, I have lots of Guidepost magazines and Maine Fish and Wildlife Magazines. They are too good to throw away. I hope someone can use them. If interested, please call (207) 784-4336 any time and leave a message if there is no answer. – No Name, No Town.
