BUCKFIELD – Ten teams competed in the annual Buckfield Recreation Committee softball tournament Saturday in hot, humid weather.

The committee started the tournament nine years ago, with the neighboring towns of Hartford and Sumner joining in this year.

The participating teams this year were Brown, Frechette, Dan’s Town Team, Kennison, RPJ, Keen, Terry Hayes (the first-ever all-girls’ team), The Buckfield Hillbillies, Trenoweth and The Young Guns.

The teams ranged in size from 10 to 20 players. The last playoff was between Dan’s team, which was undefeated, and Frechette’s team, which had one loss. They had each played six games. Dan’s team won in the sixth inning, 6-5.

The teams have no actual sponsors but divide costs among themselves. Dan Jack, former Buckfield High School coach, came out of retirement to coach the all-girls team.

The teams used three ball fields, including the high school field. Many years ago, the town purchased land on Paris Hill Road for the Bessey field, as well as land on Cross Road. This field is known as the rec field, but there will be dedications to name the softball and baseball fields when a projected playground is realized. Jill Chabe of the recreation committee is working on a state grant to complete the fields and install a playground.
