NORWAY – Western Maine Art Group will welcome Gil Whitman at a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at the Matolcsy Art Center at 480 Main St.

His works will be part of the September show, “Cool Days and Hot Nights.”

Deb Lewis of WMAG said Whitman has mastered bronze, iron and steel, and he’s enjoyed learning the skills necessary to produce his representational art. His 20-foot-high sculpture of two hockey players frozen in action was commissioned by the Philadelphia Flyers hockey club. In Mystic, Conn., his “Sandpipers on the Beach” is at the Mystic Seaport Museum. At his studio are a variety of welded and painted outdoor sculptures. Inside the home, the walls are hung with wrought iron art, “paintings” of welded steel, and table sculptures, she said.

He has also created delicate, dripped and welded bronze works of woodland flowers, art works created for people who are blind.

Wine and cheese will be offered at the reception, which will be attended by Whitman and other artists exhibiting works at the show. For more information phone the gallery Wednesday through Sunday at 743-5411.
