LEWISTON – Alice M. Files, 89, a resident of 11 Hildreth St., Auburn, died Friday afternoon, Sept. 10, at Central Maine Medical Center with her family by her side.

She was born in Laconia, N.H., the daughter of Arthur L. and Jessie L. (Lavoie) Phelps. She attended Laconia schools and was a 1933 graduate of Laconia High School. She continued her education at the American International College in Springfield, Mass. Following her education, she married and raised her family as a devoted wife and mother.

She was an active member of the Sixth Street Congregational Church her whole life, and loved her church. She was active in Literacy Volunteers, having been an instructor, and received her 25-year award in recognition of her service to the Literacy Volunteers of America.

She was also a 30-year member of Faith at Work Fellowship, and had served on the state level. She was a board member of Tri-County Mental Health in Lewiston, and was affectionately known as the grandmother to her neighborhood children.

Survivors include one son, Richard Files of Greenville; two daughters, Jean F. Libbey of Auburn, and Nan L. Schleich of Danville, Conn.; one brother, Elmon L. Phelps of Guilford, N.H.; one half sister, Barbara J. Shepard of East Hampton, Conn. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Richard A. Files, who died Oct. 7, 1987; and her second husband, Frank M. Paine, who died June 29, 1994.
