JAY – A National POW-MIA Day recognition program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at the POW-MIA Remembrance Bridge Monument of All Wars, corner of Route 4 and the Riley Road.

The Frank L. Mitchell Post 3335, Veterans of Foreign Wars, its Auxiliary and the United Bikers of Maine are sponsoring the local program.

Post POW-MIA Committee Chairman John Dube said, “Every year on this special day, we hold a POW-MIA program in hope that our government will keep searching for answers and the return of our POW-MIAs to their loved ones.”

A casket-size American flag, which was draped over veteran Roger Hebert, a U.S. naval veteran of World War II, will be dedicated during the program. Two other flags, a POW-MIA flag and a state of Maine flag, will also be dedicated.

Dube said this is the 13th consecutive year that the POW-MIA program will be held. The POW-MI Remembrance Bridge of All Wars was dedicated on April 25, 1992.

The public is invited to attend and participate in the program. Small American and POW-MIA flags as well as song sheets will be distributed. The program will conclude with the laying of a wreath, firing squad, “Taps” and audience participation in the song, “Some Gave All.”

Anyone wishing to donate their loved one’s casket-size American flag to be flown at the monument may do so by contacting Dube at 897-5335.
