MEXICO – Two convicted sex offenders from the Augusta area who were on probation were caught by police on Sept. 3 after meeting with a 13-year-old girl at a Mexico residence, said Chief James Theriault.

Edward M. Newcomb, 23, of Chelsea was charged with violation of a Kennebec County probation hold. With him was Donald A. Mason, 21, of Augusta who was charged with a probation violation out of the same county.

Both were transported to Oxford County jail in Paris.

Also arrested was Kimberly Theriault, 26, of Mexico. She was charged with hindering apprehension and prosecution. She is not related to Chief Theriault.

Chief Theriault said Wednesday that the 13-year-old girl’s mother contacted police, reporting that her daughter was meeting with Newcomb and Mason on Sept. 3 and over the weekend.

Then police received a tip that the two men were at Kimberly Theriault’s residence with the teenager.

Patrolman Roy Hodsdon responded, caught and arrested Newcomb at the residence.

At that time, Mason wasn’t found, because, Chief Theriault said, Kimberly Theriault had hidden him in the apartment, then, after Hodsdon left, “tried getting him out of town in a car.”

But Hodsdon was waiting and arrested the pair together as they were heading out of town, Chief Theriault said.

Police had yet to determine the connection, if any, between the 13-year-old and Mason and Newcomb.

“We have no idea how she met these guys, and it’s not known yet if anything sexual occurred between them,” the chief said.

Information about both men can be found on the Maine Sex Offender Registry.

Newcomb was convicted of sexual abuse of a minor on Oct. 17, 2003, in 7th District Court in Augusta. He was sentenced the same day to 364 days in Kennebec County jail, with all but 120 days suspended, and given a year of probation.

Mason was convicted of sexual abuse of a minor on May 16, 2003, in the same court. He was sentenced the same day to 364 days in jail, but was credited with already serving 200 days. He was placed on probation after his release.
