FAYETTE – Doris A. Stevens, 91, a longtime resident of North Road in Fayette, died suddenly Wednesday, Sept. 15, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 13, 1913, in Fayette, the daughter of Donald A. and Verda Hardy Gordon. She was a 1931 graduate of Livermore Falls High School where she was a member of the first girls basketball team and was captain in her senior year.

On June 30, 1933, she married Norman “Red” Stevens in Fayette. He passed away on Dec. 26, 1992. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was a homemaker most of her life.

She had worked for a time at Kents Hill School as a cleaner. She was a former member of the Fayette PTA and the local grange. She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, fishing, camping and traveling. She was a sports fan, and especially enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Patriots.

She is survived by a son, Errol Stevens and his wife, Beverly, of Fayette; a daughter, Norma Welch, of Chesterville; a sister, Roberta Whittaker, of Wilton; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Marchetti, a sister, Ruth Allen, and a brother, Harvey Gordon.
