ANDOVER – Excessive speed along a curvy and hilly road was the apparent cause of an accident early Friday afternoon that injured four Rumford-area teenagers.

A 14-year-old boy was transported to Central Maine Medical Center by a Lifeflight helicopter. Three others were transported to Rumford Hospital by Med-Care Ambulance Service.

Maine State Trooper Daniel Hanson said Emily Clifford, age 18, of Rumford apparently lost control of the 1996 Chevy Lumina sedan she was driving northeast on the South Arm Road. The vehicle crossed the road, crashed and came to rest in a clump of trees.

A Rumford-area 14-year-old boy was transported to CMMC with non-life-threatening head injuries, said Hanson. He said late Friday afternoon that the boy was conscious and alert and undergoing treatment. The boy was seated on the passenger side of the vehicle and was not wearing a safety belt. The three other riders were wearing their safety belts. The car’s air bags also deployed.

A 15-year-old Rumford boy was transported to Rumford Hospital, then turned over to his parents. A 16-year-old Rumford boy was transported to Rumford Hospital where he was treated and released, said Hanson.

Clifford was being treated for neck pain at the local hospital Friday afternoon, said Hanson. A Rumford Hospital spokeswoman would not confirm whether Clifford was at the facility. No further information was available.

The Andover Fire Department were first at the scene of the 12:10 p.m. accident. They removed the teenagers from the vehicle. Two wardens from the Maine Warden Service, Steve Allarie and Brock Clukey, secured the area until Hanson arrived.

Hanson planned to reconstruct the accident later in the afternoon.

Hanson estimated damages of about $2,500 to the vehicle.
