TURNER – Two goalies, two pressure-packed halves, two resounding clankers off the goal posts – and two shutouts.
Brian Leighton saved Leavitt from a sluggish first half start and B.J. Levasseur held the fort as Edward Little wilted in the second half as the teams battled to a 0-0 tie in Leavitt High School’s homecoming game on Saturday.
Leighton finished with 12 saves, nine of which came in the first half, while Levasseur stopped nine shots, seven of which came in the second half and in overtime.
“There were a couple of times I thought we had the game,” said Leavitt coach Isaiah Davis. “There was one in particular that I thought for sure was going to be in over his head. he made a great play on the ball.”
The shot Davis referred to came in the 23rd minute of the second half off the foot of midfielder Wil Sideman. The boot from about 25 yards was arcing into the top of the net, but as Levasseur backpedaled, he leapt at the last second and tipped it just over the cross bar.
“I was talking with Coach about it this week, about how I didn’t used to get to those,” said Levasseur. “I’ve been working a bit on those in practice, on getting to the ball quicker, and it helped there. I don’t know that I would have been able to get that last year.”
That shot came less than three minutes after a shot from Leavitt forward Zach Burgess from less than 10 yards deflected hard off of both the left post and the cross bar and popped back out into the middle, and was the culmination of a frustrating game for the Hornets.
“I think we were tired, sluggish in the first half,” said Davis. “They took advantage of that and really dominated.”
Despite having just four seniors to Leavitt’s 12, the Eddies (4-3-1) dominated the first half, playing a possession game that forced the Hornets (1-4-1) to scramble and tire quickly.
“If we play the whole game like we played the first half, we win this game,” said EL coach Dave Morin. “I think we controlled play and made them nervous in the first, and they did the same back to us in the second.”
EL’s best chances came in the first half, all in the first 20 minutes of the game. Less than three minutes in Brian Erickson clanged one off the crossbar on the Eddies’ first corner kick opportunity of the game, and two minutes later a Tyler Dorris header nearly beat Leighton.
In the 13th minute, Nate Guerrette actually had two whacks at the ball within five yards of the keeper, but Leighton again stopped the threat.
“I know that we have to help each other out,” said Leighton of his team. “I can’t win games by myself, and they can’t win if I don’t play well. I have high goals this year.”
Leavitt had the better opportunities in the overtime period as well, but Levasseur made his second diving stop of the game on a quick shot from Andy Moreau at the top of the box to preserve the draw.
