OXFORD – Five people suffered minor injuries Monday in a three-car collision on Route 26, according to police.

All three vehicles were totaled, said Sgt. Rickie Jack of the Oxford Police Department. Traffic on Route 26 was detoured to Fore Street for nearly an hour.

The accident occurred at 3 p.m. near the Advent Christian Church, Jack said.

Robert Thompson, 60, of 105 Adams Road, Brunswick, had stopped his 2005 Chrysler minivan at a traffic signal in the southbound lane when his vehicle was struck from behind by a 1986 Chrysler sedan, Jack said. The sedan, he said, was driven by Harry D. Hutchinson, 58, of West Paris.

“After (Hutchinson) struck Mr. Thompson from behind, that pushed Mr. Thompson’s vehicle into the oncoming lane,” Jack said. Thompson’s vehicle then collided with a 2000 Ford Explorer driven by Brenda Mowatt, 53, of 534 Greenwood Road, Norway.

Thompson and his wife, Donna Thompson, 57, who was riding in the front passenger seat, were taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital, Jack said. Robert Thompson had an injured arm and Donna Thompson an injured leg, he said.

According to hospital officials, Robert Thompson was treated and released, but Donna Thompson was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Mowatt and passengers Howard Dyke, 66, and Marie Dyke, 73, were also taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital, Jack said. According to the sergeant, Mowatt suffered an injured leg, while Howard Dyke complained of back pain and Marie Dyke complained of neck pain.

All three were treated and released, hospital officials said Tuesday.

The Dykes’ address was not known.

Neither Hutchinson nor his 19-year-old passenger, Gary Goodman, were injured, Jack said. Goodman’s address was not known.

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt, Jack said. The driver-side and passenger-side air bags deployed in both Thompson’s and Mowatt’s vehicles.

That, he said, “actually may have saved their lives.”

Jack said inattention seemed to have caused the accident.
