Society speaker

BETHEL – Robert Spidell, Andover native, now residing in San Clemente, Calif., will be the featured speaker at the Bethel Historical Society lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the society’s Dr. Moses Mason House meeting room.

Spidell will make a presentation on the history of his native town, which this year observes the bicentenary of its incorporation. Spidell has spent years studying the history of Andover, and last year edited and published a book on Pynelis.

The lecture is free and open to anyone interested. Those wishing to make a tax deductible gift to the society’s 2004 annual fund should send it to the society at P.O. Box 12, Bethel, ME 04217-0012.

Extension meeting

PARIS – The Oxford County Extension Association invites the public to its annual meeting in celebration of University of Maine Cooperative Extension programming throughout the year. The meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 18, at the First Congregational Church in South Paris. Registration will begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by a turkey dinner ($7 a person) at 6:15 p.m.

The program will be a “Trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp” with Drs. David Baker and Robert Story.

Lunch meeting

RUMFORD – The members of the Stephens High School class of 1949 will meet for a regular monthly luncheon at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at Teena’s. This is a weekday change from the usual Wednesday.

Red Hats

RUMFORD – The Red Hat Mommas of Western Maine met on Sept. 29 for a chicken pie supper served and prepared by the Rumford United Methodist Church. Violet Swan did a reading on “That Little Box.” Red hat pins were won by Mary Pulsifer, Louise Caron and Patty Arsenault. At the October meeting there will be a contest for the best decorated hat.
