AUBURN – Police are continuing to investigate a Friday accident in which a woman received severe head injuries from being pinned under a moving car.

Lt. Rick Coron on Saturday said a woman in her 50s, whom he declined to identify, was traveling northbound Friday at 6 a.m. on Washington Street when a tractor-trailer allegedly struck her car from behind.

Her white 1992 Dodge Shadow swerved into the southbound lane, where it was hit by an oncoming car. Coron said the woman was ejected from her vehicle, then went rolling down the road and became wedged under the back bumper of the car that had just hit her.

Coron said the woman underwent surgery Friday, but information on her condition was unavailable.

Maine State Police have reconstructed the accident, he said. And police were still getting in touch with motorists who dialed 911 for help in the minutes afterward to find out what happened.

Coron said police have not been able to contact the woman’s family. The woman was staying at a local hotel, but it was not clear if she was from the area.

No charges have been filed in connection with the accident.

This was the second serious accident on Washington Street in a 24-hour period. George Cotton, 84, of Lewiston, was hurt Thursday night when his car was hit by a tractor-trailer. He remained in critical condition Saturday night, according to a nursing supervisor at Central Maine Medical Center.
