OWEGO, N.Y. (AP) – State police say they raided an illegal drug lab in the Southern Tier that was making a new designer drug far more potent than Ecstasy.

The drug is known as “2CB” and is usually manufactured as a red pill or a white powder, said Lt. Patrick J. Garey, who added that it was believed to be the first seizure of the substance in the state.

The drug often is taken with LSD or Ecstasy and is reported to be common in the Washington, D.C. area, Garey said. He said it is a synthetic, hallucinogenic substance whose effects last three to six hours. The drug produces serious side effects, including confusion, cardiovascular disturbances and dehydration.

The drug was found Sunday when state police were called to break up a fight at a site in the hamlet of Lockwood.

Garey said the area has been the hotbed of the county’s meth labs in recent years.

No arrests have been made yet in Sunday’s raid.
