A frequent source of complaint at the State Educational Department and one likely to come up at the session of the Maine Teachers’ Association, is the question of salaries paid to the teachers in this State. The average pay of the male teacher in this State is $36.05 a month, while the average pay for the female teachers is $27.24 a month. This is only $1.04 less than they pay the female teachers out in that comparatively new region of Oklahoma. In only five states in the union do they pay less than in Maine, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi.
