AUGUSTA (AP) – Democrat Tom Allen claimed a fifth term as Republican Charles Summers concluded an underdog bid in the state’s 1st Congressional District.

Summers conceded shortly after 10 p.m., telling backers he had pledged his “full support” to Allen.

With 27 of 206 1st District precincts reporting, or 13 percent, Allen led Summers by 30,739 votes to 18,605 votes – 62 percent to 38 percent, according to unofficial returns.

The 1st District encompasses more heavily populated communities in southern and central Maine, while the 2nd District is frequently described as the largest congressional district east of the Mississippi and incorporates most of the state.
