With just one town reporting as of 11:30 p.m., the race between Republican Bruce Hanley and Democrat Teresa Hayes was still undetermined at midnight.

Hanley, a Clean Elections candidate, won handily in his hometown of Paris by a vote of 1,583 to 1,062. Results were not in for the other district towns of Hartford, Sumner and Hayes’ hometown of Buckfield.

Hanley, a member of the Paris Republican Town Committee, is retired after serving as general manager of Falcon Shoe of Lewiston for 40 years. This is his first try at public office, although his son, Dana, served as a state senator in the same seat years ago.

His top priority as a lawmaker will be improving the business climate in the state and bringing state spending under control.

Hayes, also a Clean Elections candidate, is a 12-year veteran of the SAD 39 board who serves as a guardian ad litem for the state.

Her stated top priority is tax reform. As a 16-year resident of Buckfield, she said she knows the needs of the people in her district.

“I want to invest my time, energy and common sense in helping to define the challenges clearly and devise solutions that will work for all of us.”
