JAY – Merton D. Harris, 83, of Bridge Street, Jay died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family Monday, Nov. 1.

He was born in Langtown, July 26, 1921, the son of Roy and Ina (Stewart) Harris. He attended New Sharon schools, then went to work on a local farm until he entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He served his country in the European Theatre of World War II until 1945.

Upon his return home he worked as a lumberman and married Vere Bachelder in Dallas Plantation. They had 55 happy years together when she passed away in April of 2000. Following the war and more years as a lumberman, he worked for the State of Maine Highway Department until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, time spent with his family, and his bird, “Tia.”

Survivors include a daughter, Ina Asselin and her husband, Walter, of Jay; a son, Leo and his wife, Suzanne, of Jay; five grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, and four sisters.
