Democrat Marge Medd of Norway held a slim lead over Republican Dave Hastings of Fryeburg in the Senate District 13 race as of 11:30 p.m.

Results were unavailable at press time in Hastings’ hometown of Fryeburg, where he is a practicing attorney.

Both candidates are making their first try at public office.

Medd won in her hometown of Norway, 1,637 to 983, and neighboring Oxford, 1,090 to 893, and Paris, 1,584 to 1,072, while Hastings held sway in Bridgton, 1,555 to 1,288, nearby Naples, 1,117 to 914, Hiram, 474 to 332, Porter, 454 to 327, and Brownfield, 450 to 363.

With the six towns of Bridgton, Naples, Norway, Oxford and Paris reporting, the results were 7,535 for Medd, and 6,998 for Hastings.

A former teacher and former chairwoman of the Maine State Board of Education, Medd campaigned with a focus on bringing more jobs to Maine and economic development.

Medd is the chairwoman of the Growth Council of Oxford Hills.

Hastings, a trustee at Fryeburg Academy and three-term SAD 72 director, said he knows the challenges faced by small businesses. He said he believes in keeping growth down, and said he would listen carefully to all points of view before casting a vote in the Senate.
