RUMFORD – By 11 p.m. Tuesday, political newcomer Paula Smith, an Andover Republican, was leading incumbent state Rep. John Patrick, D-Rumford, with 260 votes to 196 in the District 92 race.

Smith garnered 157 votes to Patrick’s 124 in Weld; 59 votes to Patrick’s 38 in Rangeley Plantation; and 44 votes to Patrick’s 34 in Byron.

Towns not yet reporting were Andover, Roxbury, Rumford, Sandy River Plantation, and Madrid Township.

Patrick, a MeadWestvaco maintenance worker, is seeking a third term. He said he has worked to bring economic development, jobs and education to his home area and to Maine.

Patrick said that if elected, he intends to find greater savings in the state budget by working to consolidate government services.

Smith believed she could be a stronger voice for the people of District 92 because of her hands-on experience working in a school system and owning a small business. She is a realtor and owns Wyman Hill Orchard.
