OXFORD – An 11-month-old girl remained in critical condition Wednesday, a day after a fire that claimed the life of her brother.

Andrea Bennett, who was rescued from her crib during the early morning fire at Oxford Pines Trailer Park, was being treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Her brother, 7-year-old Shawn Bennett, died from smoke inhalation despite the efforts of a police officer who pulled the boy from the burning trailer.

Andrea Bennett was rescued from the blazing building when a neighbor carried her to safety, officials said. The nature of the baby’s injuries were not disclosed, although officials have said they are not believed to be life-threatening.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating the blaze. Although an exact cause had not been determined, investigators said the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Kathy Bennett and her husband, Neil Gephart, parents of the children, were treated for smoke inhalation and cuts, as was Oxford police Officer Alan Coffin.
