Republican James Hamper beat Democratic candidate Kathleen Dougherty by 825 votes Tuesday to win the District 100 seat.

Hamper brought in 2,626 votes to Dougherty’s 1,801.

Both candidates were running for state office for the first time.

Hamper, of Oxford, said his interest in the political process began when he joined state Rep. Ted Heidrich’s team in January 1998.

His past positions have included seats on the Oxford Oxford Budget Committee, the Oxford Planning Board and the Oxford County Republican Committee.

He is a carpenter, job foreman and home designer with Bartow Construction, Otisfield.

Dougherty, of Otisfield, works as a customer service representative at L.L. Bean’s Hunting and Fishing Store.
