DIXFIELD – Rep. Randy Hotham will return for another term in the Legislature, defeating challenger Linda Petrie by 202 votes in the District 93 race Tuesday night.

“It was a close race,” Hotham said Wednesday afternoon from his Dixfield home.

“I figured it would be, with Mexico being the largest town, but we had a great turnout across the board. Obviously, I’m pleased with the results.”

District 93 is composed of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, Mexico and Peru.

Petrie, a Democrat from Mexico, won her hometown vote, besting Hotham 915-579. After that, it was all Hotham.

He won the most votes in the other four towns, tallying 2,397 votes to Petrie’s 2,195, and winning by a 4.4 percent margin.

“Mexico is Linda’s hometown, and she’s a well-respected person there, so I didn’t expect to win there, but I was able to offset her here in Dixfield,” Hotham said.

Hotham, a Republican, has served in the Legislature for two years. He supports changing the state’s economy to create more jobs to keep Maine’s children from seeking employment in other states.

He said he was looking forward to “some challenges” during his second term, including tax reform.

“I’m pleased with the governor’s comments that he is going to put forward a proposal for tax reform by the first week in December. When the governor puts forward something, it gets everyone’s attention. You know something will be done, and that’s a good thing,” Hotham said.
