AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Kyle Busch keeps piling up rookie records in NASCAR’s Busch Series.

The 19-year-old brother of Nextel Cup points leader Kurt Busch on Thursday added a fifth pole to the record he already holds, taking the top spot for Saturday’s Bashas’ Supermarket 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Busch turned a track record lap of 133.819 mph on the one-mile Phoenix oval, plenty fast enough to beat Greg Biffle’s 132.319 and the 132.319 of Jamie McMurray, both full-time drivers in the Cup series. Series leader Martin Truex Jr. was ninth at 131.694.

“It’s pretty good to be able to come out here for our first time and sit on the pole,” Busch said. “It’s easy to say but, hopefully, we can keep the No. 5 Chevrolet out front, lead the most laps and win the race. That would be the easiest way for us to keep going in the points standings.”

The youngster goes into the Phoenix race as the series runner-up, trailing Truex by 176 points with just three races remaining. The Chance 2 Motorsports driver can give team co-owners Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Teresa Earnhardt the title simply by finishing 10th or better in each of the last three races.

But Busch, who will move up to Cup next season, taking over the No 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet from two-time champion Terry Labonte, can still set more records, even if he doesn’t win the title.

Busch, currently tied with Biffle for the most wins by a rookie with five, needs to lead only seven more laps to match Biffle’s 2001 record of 948 laps led by a first-year driver and needs two top-10 finishes to break Biffle’s record of 21.
