AUBURN – The Androscoggin Retired Educators Association met for its annual scholarship auction on Oct. 13 at the Auburn United Methodist Church.

Bruce Bell, chairman of the Community Service Committee, served as auctioneer, assisted by Beth Bell, Hugh Keene, Arlene Simons and Helen Alden. In addition to the auction, two items were raffled. Mildred Covell held the winning raffle ticket for a basket of food and household items, and Jane Doucette won the cableknit sweater made and donated by Beth Bell.

The $650 raised at the auction will be added to the fund to support a yearly scholarship for an Androscoggin County student who plans to pursue a degree in education.

Also, at the meeting, Pat McCluskey, co-president, announced two awards. Androscoggin retired educators received a certificate from the Maine Education Association-Retired for the most volunteer hours reading to others during the past year. On behalf of the local association, Bell was presented a check for the scholarship fund and a Dr. Seuss book, which he will donate to a local library.

In addition, Paul Belisle received a Dr. Seuss book for being number one in the state in time spent reading to others.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston. All retired educators and their spouses are invited.
