DURHAM – A serial rapist, jailed on a charge of assaulting a neighbor with a club last spring, now has additional legal woes.

Ronald Leno, 56, was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday on a new charge of insurance deception.

He is accused of reporting that a motorcycle had been stolen so he could get insurance money.

Investigators said Leno had reported that the bike was stolen in Portsmouth, N.H. Acting on a tip, police later found the motorcycle at a local self-storage facility.

The deception case against Leno marks the latest of his legal problems dating back to the 1970s, when he was convicted on sex charges.

Police say Leno is a sexual predator who preyed on women and young girls in Hawaii and Massachusetts.

Last spring and summer, several news accounts of Leno’s criminal history aired after the convicted sex offender moved to Meadow Road in Durham.

Leno is charged with beating Paul Pugliese, also of Durham, after Pugliese went to his house on Meadow Road to warn him to stay away from his family.

Leno has been in Androscoggin County Jail ever since. He is scheduled to go to trial on the assault case Nov. 22.

The new charge against Leno was filed after an investigation by Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy William Gagne.

The crime carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence upon conviction.
